FAQs
What does it mean to be a part of One
%?
When you or your group commits to the One % campaign,
each participant agrees to practice meditation or quieting prayer
for a total of 45 minutes a day. This 45 minutes can be done at
one sitting or can be divided into two or more sessions of not less
than 10 minutes at a time.
What is the goal of One %?
According to Dr. John Davies, “…if one percent of
a population of more than 10,000 people practiced meditation it
would have an impact on the collective consciousness of a society.
This impact…would result in a reduction of violence in the
community and on armed conflict throughout the world.” Our
goal in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina is to see
a significant reduction in the crime rate.
How did One % begin?
Neusom Holmes, minister of Unity Church of the Triangle in Raleigh,
North Carolina, read an article about Dr. Davies and his research
and began asking people in his church to participate. The response
was overwhelming, and at this time over twenty-five percent of the
congregation has committed to the practice. Dr. Davies has pointed
to the exponential power of small groups of people practicing quieting
prayer or meditation together, and with this in mind, Unity now
holds one-hour silent meditations at noon during the week and on
Sunday night. You or your group may want to organize small groups
also.
I don’t have 45 minutes a day to commit
to the program. Is there another way that I can participate?
If two percent of the group will commit to One %, participants
may join with a partner and have the partners meditate or pray for
the prescribed 45 minutes every other day, or each partner can meditate
for half of that time every day. All you have to do is sign up for
twenty minutes a day, and we’ll automatically count two twenty
minute people as one.
What other benefits might be realized from One
%?
It is proven that meditation and prayer have benefits for the
participant that include healing, therapy, wellness, health-maintenance,
longer life with fewer degenerative diseases, personal awareness
and consciousness, creation of balance between mind/heart/body.
Individuals who are only meditating and/or praying with a goal of
self-improvement or spiritual enlightenment will contribute in positive
ways to society.
How do I decide what method of participation
– meditation or quieting prayer – is best for me?
There are many resources available on meditation
and quieting prayer. Books
& CDs , Links. You will
want to choose a method that best fits you and your spiritual tradition.
It is not the intention of One % to say that one method
is better than another.
Will there be any scientific measurement of the
effects of One %?
Yes. The data from these measurements will be available on our
web site, www.whenonepercent.org , as they become available.
Is this program only in the Research Triangle
region?
For now, yes. Our goal, however, is to make One % a nationwide
and, eventually, worldwide movement.
